Get Back to Positive

It’s been a rough week at work I have been doubting if I’m where I want to be.  I’ve had many negative thought patterns go through my head.  In order to turn this around, I’ve turned to positive thinking and trying to repattern my thoughts to get to positive as fast as possible.

Phrases from earlier this week were:

“I can’t do this anymore.”

“I’m not winning.”

“This situation sucks.”

These are all negative thoughts.  These thoughts did nothing for me except keep me down.  I was in a spiral and having a hard time getting out of it.

At home, I’ve got my wife who can help me process a situation and get me on the right track.  At work, there isn’t anyone to help me through these spirals.  I had to get myself out of this spiral or I was about to walk out on work and people who depend on me.  While I knoew I wouldn’t walk out, that is all I could think about doing.

In order to get out of this spiral, I first assessed the situation.  Was it as bad as I thought?  No.  Next was to develop a plan.  What’s the most effective way to get things going in the right direction?  After coming up with a plan, it was time to put it to action and evaluate.

This helped, but of course another problem arose and I began to fall back into the same downward spin.  This time, I needed help to lift me up.  Fortunately, I was listening to Jack Canfield on The School of Greatness podcast.  Jack co-authored the Chicken Soup For Your Soul series and The Success Principles.

It was good timing for me.  He discussed the power of positive and negative thoughts.  The basic theme was whatever you thought is what you would receive.  An example was, “I am sick”.  Just by stating that your were sick, you’ve just set your mind to begin feeling that way.  Your brain knows what sick feels like.  By proclaiming you are sick, your brain begins to make you feel that way and you become sick.

Another example, “I never have enough.”  By stating you never have enough, you never will.  You’ll work towards goals, but still never have enough.  The opposite was “I have an abundance.”  This thought pattern put your mind in a mode of satisfaction.  When you have an abundance, more comes to you.

This has been a theme through podcasts and books that I have listened to.  Keep the message positive.  Your brain is hard-wired for negative.  It helps to protect you from danger.  However, we do not face the same dangers that our ancestors have faced in the past.  If you’ve got a roof over your head, food on your plate and a place to rest your head, you’ve got it better than most.  Likely you’ve got a better life than those that came before you.  You just may not realize it.

With this positive theme reinforced, I started to work on myself.  My phrases changed to:

“I can get this done.”

“This will make me better.”

“Having work is good.”

The change was immediate.  I felt more upright and ready to tackle any upcoming challenge.  I was able to get back into the fight and put my plan to work.

Now the trick is to maintane this positive mindset.  It’s going to be a challenge for me, but to stay positive, I’m visualizing where I’ll be and how I’ll feel once I get through these challenges.  I’m also making matter of fact statements knowing that I’ll get the job done.  I’m removing the doubt and hammering away at the problems.  They’re not going to beat me and thry’re not going to keep me down.

If you’re in a rut, get out of it with positive words.  Your own self-talk will do more for you than praise from others.  Be confident that you can get it done and stay positive.

Hopefully this blog will help change your mindset.  If this post has helped, please pass it on to a friend.
